Rag Flower
Learn a new fun and creative family activity with our Rag Flowers project! Using simple materials like canning rings and fabric scraps, you will learn to create sunflowers using a simple knotting technique. This project is perfect for all ages and skill levels, providing a fantastic opportunity for kids to explore upcycling and enjoy hands-on crafting.
Materials:
- Scrap Fabric
- Canning Ring
- Canning Lids
- Twine
- Hot Glue
Step 1: Cut the scrap fabric into strips. The length of the strip will determine the size of your petals.
Step 2: Fold a piece of fabric in half.
Step 3: Pull the center of the fabric through the middle of canning ring from the back and put the ends of the fabric through the loop. Pull to tighten.
Step 4: Continue until the canning ring is full, making sure to loop the fabric in the same direction each time.
Step 5: Trim the ends of the fabric to create an even flower.
Step 6: Fluff the fabric by pull the petals apart.
Step 7: Fold the twine in half and loop over the ring in the same manner. Tie a knot in the end.
Step 8: Place the sunflower upside down on a hard surface. Place another, contrasting piece of fabric over the black side of the canning lid. With the fabric down, press the canning lid into the back of the canning ring. The lid will not completely go into the ring because of the bulk of the fabric. Apply pressure to bend and dent the lid towards the front of the flower.
Step 9: Tuck the ends of the center fabric towards the center of the lid. Place hot glue along the edge of the back side of the canning ring.
Ideas to take the fabric flowers to the next level:
- Incorporate Different Fabrics: Use lace, denim, or burlap to create a variety of textures and appearances.
- Add Personalization: Paint or dye the fabrics in custom colors or patterns.
- Enhance with Details: Attach decorative buttons, beads, or faux leaves to the centers.
- Create a Bouquet: Make multiple sunflowers in varying sizes and display them together.
Further Learning and Discussion Questions:
Discussion questions for reflection:
– What materials did we use today that would otherwise be thrown away?
– How did the knotting technique help create the petals?
– What other flowers could we create using this method?
– How can we use colors to make our sunflowers look more realistic or creative?
