Winter 2016 Free Family Art Workshops
During January, February, and March, WheatonArts will offer free family art workshops on select Saturdays. The workshops, which will take place every other weekend, will be offered in The Gallery of Fine Craft. All materials are included and prior registration is strongly encouraged. Walk-ins will be accommodated if seats are available. No prior art experience is required to participate in any workshop.
Family Art Workshops Schedule
Percussion Pods
Saturday, January 16, 2016, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Suggested ages: 7-13 years
Activity: Using clay, participants will be able to make their own musical instrument percussion pod (rattle). A variety of techniques will be demonstrated.
Easel Art
Saturday, January 30, 2016, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Suggested ages: 2-18 years
Activity: Using easels, participants will be able to create a painting, drawing, collage, or mixed-media work of art. The workshop will be led by an artist instructor that will be able to provide technique demonstrations.
Sensory Art
Saturday, February 13, 2016, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Suggested ages: 1-2 years
Activity: Toddlers will be encouraged to visit ‘experience stations.’ Stations will include cloud dough, color mixing bags, and jingle bell pencils and crayons.
Sugar Casting
Saturday, February 27, 2016, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Suggested ages: 5-13
Activity: Pȃte de verre, a kiln casting method that this activity is modeled after, literally means ‘paste of glass.’ Sugar will be used in a mold to create a casted object. Glass artwork made using pȃte de verre techniques will be on display.
Blind Contour Drawing
Saturday, March 12, 2016, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Suggested ages: 11-18 years
Activity: Blind contour drawing is drawing the shape/outline of a subject without looking at the canvas. Participants will be guided by an artist and will choose the drawing subject(s) from a variety of objects.
Finger Print Doodles
Saturday, March 26, 2016, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Suggested ages: 5-13 years
Activity: Thumb and finger prints will be the base for unique doodles and drawings. Techniques will be demonstrated by an artist for workshop participants.
During these three months of the WheatonArts modified winter operating schedule, the museum stores will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday only from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. No ticket required to shop and stroll. The Museum of American Glass and the Artist Studios are closed during these three months. The museum and the studios will reopen on April 1 when WheatonArts returns to its six-day operating schedule.
