I am a New Jersey gourd artist who enjoys making nature inspired pieces, especially those that sparkle. I have been doing some form of art since I was a little girl, but have been particularly focused on gourd art for about the last five years.
Gourd art is indeed a process. It begins with an uncut gourd. Sometimes the shape of the gourd itself can inspire a certain piece, while other times I look for a particular shape and size. Often, I work out my ideas on paper, and they grow and change as I make a piece. I usually do most of the carving first followed by wood burning and painting. Then come the embellishments which can include crystals, spikes, or epoxy flowers (just as examples). Gourd art is so enjoyable because it involves so many different media and techniques.
