Elizabeth Schappert has been a craft store employee, theatrical costume designer, and a middle school English teacher, though she is currently a jewelry artist living and working at the Jersey shore. Those previous occupations continued to influence her when she began making jewelry a decade ago. From them, she discovered her passion for raw materials, the process of creation, and the tangible results of hard work.
Most of Elizabeth’s jewelry pieces are inspired by the materials themselves, starting with a cabochon, crystal, or mineral that stands out in a sea of options. She is drawn to natural forms, interesting specimens, and those that can’t be set using the most traditional methods, because she appreciates the challenge of creating a structural piece of jewelry without subjugating what nature created. She often compares her process to patterning garments, in that sometimes pieces are planned and measured out carefully, while other times they develop more organically. Ultimately, Elizabeth hopes that her finished jewelry pieces bring joy to their wearers, while inspiring conversations and connections.
